Girls in Business is a mentoring program run by volunteers who bring together promising students for two days of visits to a range of businesses and business owners.

The aim is to inspire the students to put in place the tools to enable them to succeed in life and in business.

This year the girls visited with 9 businesses and met with owners and managers covering a wide range of activities.

At a function attended by parents, teachers and mentors Brendan presented each of the girls a mini iPad donated by Sistema.

Carrying Your Words

We often get emails from travelers with pictures of our Sistema containers in remote and exotic locations.  One email we recently received really touched us here in New Zealand, it was from Irishman Robert Quirke and his email is copied below:

Hi Sistema Team,

Greetings from Dublin! Quick note to let you know that on July 19th this month, I will be venturing to Russia to climb Europe's highest mountain, Mount Elbrus. At 18510 ft and -30c this will be a tough challenge. I wanted to let you know because as a part of the trip I will carry people's personal messages to world inside a sealed Sistema box. I will carry this with me all the way from my home in Dublin to Russia, to the summit of the mountain, where I will bury at the summit of Europe's highest mountain forever. The messages I have received so far come from people all over the world and are very touching. The words people send me are important to them and gives them hope. I will try my best to get to the top. I just thought I would let you know and you can see pictures on the facebook page I created called Carrying You Words:

Throughout the trip I am aiming to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society and people are donating online here:

Feel free to get in to touch any time, and if you would like some pictures from the trip just let me know.

When Brendan Lindsay read this and discovered that Robert had paid for his trip himself and had undertaken this adventure with the sole aim of raising funds for the Irish Cancer Society he donated 5000 euros to the Society via Roberts online site.  We feel very proud that Robert chose one of our containers to accompany him and the fact that it will contain so many wonderful messages to the world gives us a real sense of connection to his cause.

Perhaps you may like to support Roberts cause as well and if so just follow the links as outlined in his email above.

Sistema at Westpack South Africa

Westpack has three stores in total of which this particular store is the biggest out of the three. Not only is it the biggest out of the 3 but also the single biggest speciality store in the country with 2700 square meters of floor space and nearly double that below the store that serves as the receiving and storage area. They are a typical plastics retailer so all of our main competitors are also represented in this store i.e. Addis, Legend, etc. but after the layout was done Sistema now has the best representation out of all of them.

As mentioned, we could not merchandise the stock fast enough and in actual fact some customers were standing around waiting for me to put the price labels out so that they could buy the product. We also had a mother with a boy and girl who had in their trolley basket lunch boxes from one of our competitors but when they walked past our section the kids stopped and pointed to our lunch and sandwich boxes, the mother said that it was more expensive than what they had but they insisted and eventually bought the product and 2 Quaddies as well. This was great to see as it just shows that sales aren’t just motivated by the parent. What was also interesting is that many customers bought 3 or 4 of the same item especially on the Accented range. Tomorrow we are doing a relay in Westpack's second biggest store.

They now carry the entire range of SISTEMA, and have the products well merchandised and presented in 10 to 15 Metre runs as well as End caps and impulse purchase points around the stores. This space, coupled with the Print Adverts they have recently had running have successfully strengthened consumer awareness of Sistema in their stores.

Sistema Storage exclusive range for The Warehouse

Sistema has imported a 1,300 and a 650 tonne injection moulding machine to boost its manufacturing operations in New Zealand, allowing the company to create a new range of durable plastic home and office storage products made exclusively for The Warehouse.

The 1,300 tonne machine is one of the biggest of its type brought into New Zealand during the last 20 years according to Sistema’s managing director Brendan Lindsay. "This equipment is a one-of-a- kind industrial machine. I have not heard of any other company bringing in a similar machine to manufacture products like this in New Zealand."

"This investment has allowed us to diversify our product offering and produce heavy duty storage containers ranging in capacity from 14 to 90 litres. The range will include utility trays and organiser tubs, filing clips and removable wheels, making them the most sophisticated plastic box storage system on the market," said Mr Lindsay.

The company is proud to collaborate with The Warehouse to bring this newest offering to the New Zealand public, with the storage range going on sale this month.

TW Group CEO Mark Powell considers this a smart business move. "We have formed a long term partnership with Sistema to support the development and manufacture of this product, which reflects our commitment to stock New Zealand made products."

Sistema’s business has evolved dramatically growing from a simple backyard garage operation 30 years ago to an international success story today. "We now export our products to more than 65 countries around the world, including the United States, the UK, Europe and South Africa, but we are committed to keeping our manufacturing in New Zealand," said Mr Lindsay.

In March 2012, Prime Minister John Key opened Sistema’s new $7.5 million purpose-built production factory, allowing the company to establish an additional 50 jobs. The company currently employs more than 540 people.

NZ Sculpture on the Shore

Sistema takes its role as a part of New Zealand's society seriously. Some months ago we were approached by artists Donna Sarten and Bernie Harfleet to see if we would support them with an art installation that would be held in Devonport as part of the NZ Sculpture on the Shore, in aid of Woman's Refuge.  Donna and Bernie are passionate about supporting Woman's Refuge and asked if we would donate 6000 lunch boxes which they would use as their art installation "Feed the kids Too".  Their exhibition aims to raise money so that each of the lunch boxes can be filled with a school lunch then donated to school children from lower decile schools.

Feed the Kids Too’ is made up of 6000 empty lunch boxes, which is only a small percentage of children that go hungry each day.  The artists have found that for a viewer, spending time with a group of objects that reflect a statistical number is far more powerful than simply hearing or seeing that number mentioned in the news media.  The work is first and foremost a work of art, with the idea to generate discussion amongst its audience that hopefully may result in some change in the lives of these hungry children.  Once this exhibition ends the aim of the artists is to fill each box with a lunch and then distribute them to 6000 New Zealand school children.   If you would like to make a donation towards this you can do so at

You can see that their installation is magnificent and has already attracted a huge amount of interest including TV3.  The sight and sound of 6000 coloured Sistema lunch boxes suspended in our native Pohutakawa trees is wonderful and the setting with a backdrop of Rangitoto really sets it off.

If you get a chance to go and visit, it's at Narrow Neck beach in Devonport and runs until 16th November 2014.  (Interview with Bernie Harfleet at 6.15)

Twist 'n' Sip Caps Cleaning Instructions

Recently a number of our customers have advised us that they are having difficulty cleaning our Twist 'n' Sip drink bottle caps.
We take this feedback very seriously and have therefore posted on our website ( videos and instructions that demonstrate how to take apart and clean each of the three tops we currently have on the market.

We manufacture our tops to meet international child safety standards and it is for this reason they can be difficult to disassemble.

If you have any difficulties please contact our service centres via the Contact Us page under the Support tab on our website.

Sistema is committed to producing products that fulfill all our customers needs and our team is currently working on a number of design improvements to ensure our caps meet this criteria.

Cleaning instructions for Sistema bottle caps:

We recommend after use you remove the cap from the bottle, extend the pop up sipper to the open position and put the top either in the dishwasher or hand wash and then place in water for five minutes with a sterilising solution.
Under normal use this should be sufficient to clean the cap.

If you want to thoroughly sterilise them we recommend that you disassemble the top as per our video instructions.  There are three styles of Sistema caps currently on the market, please identify which one you have and watch the appropriate video.

Meeting with John Key in Paris

John Key was the guest of honour of the French Prime Minister, François Hollande, at the Bastille Day Parade on 14th July. There were 85 NZ and 140 Australian soldiers parading alongside the French through the centre of Paris, to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of the Somme, where many young AU and NZ soldiers lost their lives.

John Key told us an interesting story.  He apparently went out looking for an egg cooker whilst on holiday in Maui and could not believe his eyes when he found a NZ made Sistema product (our Microwave Easy Eggs) on such a small island! He said he loves it and still uses it every morning back in NZ.  He said he could ask his housekeeper to make his breakfast but since it only takes 1 minute and 10 seconds and he is up every day at 6am, he does it himself!

John Key made a speech at the table just before lunch was served. The NZ ambassador acted as a moderator and asked us all questions about what the PM had spoken about, and how these points would affect our respective businesses, including the Brexit and a potential NZ free trade agreement with Europe.

It was a very down to earth group of people and a fantastic experience for Frederic and myself. The Prime Minister and other VIPs clearly have a lot of respect for Brendan and for Sistema.

Sistema embraced by entrepreneurs in Sweden

Prince Daniel of Sweden recently visited the University of Skövde in Sweden to discuss business and entrepreneurship with students and to promote the Prince Daniel Fellowship.

This entrepreneurship program aims to inspire young people to become entrepreneurs and to support a number of companies through mentoring. The project is a long-term cooperation between Prince Daniel and the Royal Engineering Sciences.

The Prince is pictured here with students of the university who have started their own business venture promoting healthy eating on the go. What better product to use to get this great message across to their customers than Sistema's To Go range!

The team at Sistema in Scandinavia would like to congratulate them on their success to date and wish them well for their venture.

USA giant Newell Brands buys Sistema Plastics and commits to manufacturing in NZ for twenty years

Sistema, the iconic New Zealand-based manufacturer, marketer and distributor of plastic kitchen storage containers, today announced that it will be acquired by U.S.-based Newell Brands for $NZD660 million.  The sale of Sistema to Newell Brands, a company with a market capitalisation of $USD22 billion based in Hoboken, New Jersey, signifies an exciting new era for the company and the continued employment of its more than 700 employees in New Zealand and overseas.

Established 34 years ago by founder and Managing Director Brendan Lindsay, the company has seen its brand grow into a world recognised leader in innovation with a strong heritage and global distributor network.

“Newell has the expertise and market access that will enable them to take the business to the next level and create new opportunities for the company, especially in North America,” he says.

“The growth Sistema has experienced in recent years can be attributed in a large part to the hard work and dedication of our New Zealand and overseas employees. That is why I am absolutely thrilled that Newell has agreed to keep manufacturing in New Zealand for the next 20 years at our recently opened 52,000sqm manufacturing facility at a green fields site near Auckland airport.”

Mark Tarchetti, President of Newell Brands, says Sistema has been on the company’s radar for a number of years as they watched its remarkable rise into a world leading brand.

“It is an excellent business and an extraordinary success story,” he says.

“We have previously made approaches to the company and are delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement to purchase the business. We believe there are some very exciting opportunities for the company and we plan to leverage our position as a Fortune 500 company to provide the platform for further growth for Sistema.

“The new world class manufacturing facility is a tribute the fantastic efforts and talents of Brendan and his team. The plant's level of sophisticated automation will ensure its products remain internationally competitive and will help to significantly scale the business.

For Brendan Lindsay who will step down from his position as Managing Director, the sale is the culmination of 34 years work that started in a garage in Cambridge.

“It has been an incredibly exciting, and at times challenging, journey that is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of a lot of people who work and have worked for the company. We had a vision for the company but I don’t think even we imagined we would be selling our products in more than 90 countries around the world. I look forward to watching the continued growth of the business.”

Sistema's Auckland Factory Wins Top Design Award

The new Sistema factory based in Auckland has won a major design award. The article below is reproduced from the New Zealand Herald. The Sistema team were thrilled to accept the award. The purpose built facility was 2 years in the making and the business moved from Penrose to the new site in Mangere in late 2016.

"A new south Auckland headquarters and factory for a global plastics business has won a top award, judged as being world-class in its design and construction. Andy Evans, chief judge of the Property Council awards announced at the Spark Arena, said that Sistema Plastics' new manufacturing, distribution, office and headquarters building was outstanding.

The premises at 221 Ihumatao Rd is the world headquarters for Sistema, the plastics storage system invented in New Zealand and sold in 82 countries. Sistema founder Brendan Lindsay has retained the building, owned by Sistema Property Partnership, but sold the business, Evans said. The building was designed by Woodhams Meikle Zhan Architects and built by Hayden + Rollett and was tailor-designed for Sistema, he said. "That design ensures a smooth and logical flow in the production process," Evans said. The owner had "sat down with specialists to design the building from the inside out, so that it functions absolutely perfectly, there's no inefficiencies for them. "They've also future-proofed it with areas that can be subdivided and leased out."

All these attributes were recognised by Newell Brands, a American Fortune 500 company that bought the Sistema plastics business, Evans said. "And in the process signed a long-term lease for the continued occupation of the building," he said. Evans noted that it was significant an industrial development had pushed design boundaries. Sistema moved into the new south Auckland premises towards the end of last year."
